Many people might assume that pro-lifers on Christian campuses have it easier than most. Nevertheless, time and time again, pro-life students have discovered that Christian faculty and students continue to display indifference towards the injustice of abortion. Recently, Westmont College, a Christian college in California, has come into the spotlight for its continued resistance against taking a stance on abortion.
“The institution does not take a position on abortion… This is a Christian college where leadership and faculty have to sign a statement of faith, and it has come to the surface that this institution is neutral. Essentially, they have chosen moral neutrality on the issue of abortion.”
These are the words of Seth Gruber, founder and president of Westmont’s Right to Life group as a freshman. In response to the administration’s indifference towards abortion, Seth regularly stands outside the dining commons with graphic images. His display has created an uproar on campus, but it has not yet changed the school’s stalwart refusal to address the issue. Westmont administration remains silent on abortion despite the fact that the college administration often expresses the school’s positions on other issues.
“As Christians, we have a responsibility to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves… We are not doing that. Nobody is speaking up for the unborn at Westmont…With the issue of abortion, we are not talking about it. We are not addressing it, and we are not empowering students to take a pro-life stance on abortion—and be able to address the magnitude of this issue in a way that saves lives, changes minds.” -Seth Gruber, Westmont Right to Life
Today, Seth and his Right to Life group continue to put pressure on Westmont Christian University to define the school’s position on abortion. Radio stations, pro-life news outlets, and Christian groups across the country are joining in support of Westmont Right to Life.
