Their inconvenience is irrelevant,” said Hawkins. “Women have died when taking Chemical Abortion Pills and abusers have slipped those drugs to women against their wishes. Preventing those horrors is

Hope for Humanity (and the Pro-Life Movement)

  • On Monday, we were holding a display at Grand Rapids Community College – a new location that had never held an on-campus pro-life display. The morning of the display, half of the student volunteers became unavailable to help run the display – a big problem since we had already sent out a press release about the time and location. But at the last minute, volunteers from 3 other schools and Grand Rapids Right to Life abandoned their plans for the day to come help. They stayed with us all day, helped hand out literature, and had great conversations with students. This saved us hours of set-up/take-down, and turned out to be crucially important since we had a few situations where campus police were called. We changed at least 10 students’ minds about abortion that day.
  • On Monday afternoon, I met with a high school student who is starting a Students for Life group at her school. Her teacher adviser also met with us, who turned out to be a friend of mine from college who had been in my own Students for Life group when I was the student president. We hadn’t spoken in years, but now got to reconnect.
  • On Tuesday, a Students for Life group in my region saved a baby’s life by praying at the abortion facility and helping a young woman feel empowered and get her the resources she needs to raise her child.
  • On Tuesday and Wednesday, we held a Sidewalk Advocacy training with Sidewalk Advocates for Life near Ann Arbor, MI and Grand Rapids, MI that brought together students and adults from at least 15 different schools and pro-life organizations in the areas – united to helping women seeking abortion feel empowered to choose life.
  • On Thursday, I got up at 3:30am because a Students for Life leader was bold and courageous enough to do 2 hours of live interviews for the local news morning show. (What kind of college student is willing to get up at 3:30am for ANYTHING?! Let alone for something as selfless as advocating for the lives of others.) I truly felt honored and privileged to be behind the scenes of this interview to help prep and encourage this student, even as the reporters brought on other live interviews to oppose her. And she DOMINATED the entire segment.
  • Later on Thursday, we were setting up a display on campus and again ran into problems. We got to campus late, were short on volunteers again, and another news station showed up while we were still setting up. Several amazing things happened:
    • One of the group officers canceled her plans and stayed out in the cold with us to set up crosses in the lawn, despite being quite sick and needing rest.
    • As we were struggling to weigh down our water-stands that were blowing over in the wind, we had 1 person running half a mile with 1 pitcher of water at a time. University maintenance saw our struggle, and brought us the water truck used for athletics to fill them up with a hose in less than 3 minutes. This literally saved us hours of time.
    • We changed at least 6 students’ minds about abortion that day.
    • And once again, the students thrived in the interview with the news station – they were poised, confident, and gracious.
  • This was just this week. These flashes of light happen all the time. I have seen incredible things happen. I witness incredible courage, incredible selflessness, and incredible self-sacrifice on a daily basis – all for what is often times a thankless message of hope and love. There is genuine goodness in people’s hearts, and I get to witness it every day. Their light shines in the darkness of the “abortion battle”. I have never witnessed anything so inspiring. And the darkness cannot overcome it.]]>
