Earlier this month at Augustana College in Illinois, the Students for Life group hosted a showing of the movie Unplanned. In order to market the event, they hung up flyers around campus, with permission from the Office of Student Life. Imagine the group’s surprise when a few days later, the banners had been removed.
They continued to monitor the flyers up until the showing. Over those two weeks, 30 had been taken down. None of the flyers had been taken down by Student Life, however. It turns out pro-abortion students just wanted to prevent anyone from attending the movie.
What ensued is another example of how irony continues to be lost on the pro-abortion side of things. The group of students guilty of ripping down all the flyers wanted to ensure “accurate” and “factual” information… while in the meantime hanging up index cards with false or misleading information.
First, they cite that 47,000 women die from self-inflicted home abortions. They got this figure from a 2013 study conducted by Planned Parenthood’s Guttmacher Institute. The first issue with this index card flyer is that it cites a worldwide statistic, when the subject matter they’re protesting deals only with the U.S. If the vandals think the pro-lifers are being misleading, they may want to avoid suggesting that a global statistic is a U.S. statistic.
The second issue is the suggestion that a wire hanger is a natural alternative to Roe v. Wade. The accusation here is that we’re going to reverse Roe, then start distributing hangers to everyone. The point of exposing abortion for the violence that it is (like Unplanned does) and reversing Roe is to make abortion illegal AND unthinkable. No woman should have to feel like she has to kill her child, for any reason.
This isn’t to say that pro-lifers live in a fantasy-land. We work towards a world where every mother feels supported and doesn’t feel pitted against her child. But we know there will always be people in tough situations who will feel desperate. This doesn’t mean society should “aid and abet,” as it were. As a society, we can’t condone killing innocent people. Period.
This second vandal-created flyer exemplifies people’s bizarre defense of Planned Parenthood, as if they’re a small weakling being bullied, instead of the colossal, fabulously wealthy, scandal-ridden abortion empire they actually are. As SFLA president Kristan Hawkins said recently, everyone in Washington, D.C. is terrified of Planned Parenthood’s lobbyists. They’re the bullies.
Plus… the claims on this card are a bit ambiguous.
“Planned Parenthood is a true nonprofit.” What does that mean? It sounds like we’re dealing in vague definitions of what “nonprofit” means, like you get that title if your organization has good intentions or “seems like a good guy.” In reality, it’s a tax status. “Nonprofits” are capable of being quite profitable. Here are some numbers from Planned Parenthood’s own annual report:
In the undercover Planned Parenthood videos, executives talk about selling enough fetal body parts to buy Lamborghinis. In 2017, it was reported that: “Salaries of CEOs at Planned Parenthood affiliates have skyrocketed to an average of $237,999, and hit $389,514 in the group’s headquarters. In the report on CEO pay, the group found that all 56 CEOs in the system make over 100,000 a year, one-tenth of Planned Parenthood’s boss Cecile Richards, who made $957,952.”
Next claim is that Abby Johnson is a liar and Unplanned “sensationalizes” abortion. Imagine that… a movie, making a concept theatrical and emphasizing something for climactic effect. This should go without saying, but that’s what movies do. They tell larger than life stories that we watch to glean meaning from, in this case, that something bad happened to a woman and abortion is violence.
As for calling Abby Johnson a liar? It gets old, calling people you disagree with liars. In this case, it’s also a bit victim-blamey, too. The vandal cites Texas Monthly on this point, which is a liberal publication that questioned Johnson’s authenticity 10 years ago. Their main beef? That Abby Johnson’s facility had no record of the procedure that caused her conversion.
Sure, that’s watertight since Planned Parenthood would never cover up the truth for their own benefit (see abuse coverups & their raid on David Daleiden’s home) and they’ve never been caught in illegal record-keeping transgressions (see a recent report of illegal record-keeping transgressions, and a bonus case involving the abortionist who kept about 2,300 aborted fetuses in his garage & car trunk).
Point is, we’ve done our research. It doesn’t cease to become research when someone disagrees with it. Also, people need to quit vandalizing our stuff. It’s not a good look.
